Asteriornis is an extinct genus of bird from the Late Cretaceous period.

It is known from a single species called Asteriornis maastrichtensis. This small, long-legged bird lived near the coastline of what is now Belgium. It is a very important fossil for scientists studying evolution. Asteriornis is one of the oldest birds that definitely belongs to the group Neornithes. Neornithes is the group that includes every single bird alive on Earth today. By studying this bird, researchers can learn how modern birds began to evolve.

Scientists study the anatomy of Asteriornis to understand its place in history. The skull is almost complete and provides many clues. The beak was lightweight and slightly downcurved with a rounded tip. The skull was at its narrowest point over the orbits, which are the eye sockets. The quadrate bone, which helps form the jaw joint, has unique features. It connects to the skull roof using two large knobs and one smaller knob called the tuberculum subcapitulare. These specific bone shapes are very similar to those found in modern birds like ducks and chickens.

Asteriornis shows a fascinating mix of different bird traits. It possesses characteristics of both galliformes and anseriformes. Galliformes are birds like chickens and pheasants. Anseriformes are birds like ducks and geese. For example, its unfused snout bones and nasal bones resemble galliform birds. However, its postorbital process, the bone at the rear of the eye socket, curves forward like an anseriform. This mix suggests Asteriornis was a close relative to the last common ancestor of both groups. It demonstrates how animals close to a shared ancestor often share traits from both lineages.

The discovery of Asteriornis changed how we think about bird history. It was first unearthed in 2000 by an amateur paleontologist named Maarten van Dinther. He found the specimen at the CBR-Romontbos quarry near Eben-Emael in Belgium. The fossil was found within four blocks of sediment from the Maastricht Formation. This formation is so important it gave its name to the Maastrichtian stage of the Cretaceous period. The bones are now held at the Maastricht Natural History Museum. Because of its unique nature, researchers gave the bird the nickname "Wonderchicken."

The age of these fossils provides a vital timeline for Earth's history. Asteriornis lived approximately 66.8 to 66.7 million years ago. This was less than one million years before the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event. That massive event was caused by a Chicxulub impactor, a large asteroid. This impact killed off all non-avian dinosaurs and many other animals. Asteriornis lived alongside more primitive birds like Ichthyornis. Because Asteriornis survived while others did not, it helps scientists guess why modern birds thrived. Its small size, ground-living lifestyle, and generalist diet may have been key advantages.

The name Asteriornis itself carries deep meaning. The name comes from "ornis," the Greek word for bird. It also includes "Asteria," a Greek goddess associated with falling stars. In Greek myth, Asteria transformed into a quail. This name alludes to the falling star asteroid that caused the extinction. It also connects to the galloanserans, which include quails. The species name, maastrichtensis, honors the geological formation where the fossil was found. These names link the animal to both its biology and the cosmic event that shaped its world.

Classification of Asteriornis remains a complex topic in paleontology. Different scientific methods have led to different conclusions. Using a method called parsimony, some researchers placed it as a sister taxon to Galloanserae. This means it was a distant relative of the ancestor of ducks and chickens. Using a Bayesian protocol, others placed it directly within Galloanserae. Specifically, it was seen as a close relative to Galliformes. While different studies in 2021 and 2024 suggested it might be a paleognath, most researchers still view it as a neornithean. These debates help scientists refine their understanding of the tree of life.
