Anchiornis was a small dinosaur that lived a very long time ago.

It is a special kind of dinosaur called a paravian. The name Anchiornis comes from Greek words that mean "near bird." This is because it helps scientists understand how birds and dinosaurs are related. It was about the size of a crow.

Scientists have found hundreds of its fossils. These fossils are very well preserved. They show us what the animal looked like in real life. This makes it a very important part of the history of life on Earth.

This dinosaur had a very interesting way it worked. It had long arms and long legs. It was covered in many different types of feathers. Some feathers were simple and downy like soft fuzz. Other feathers were longer and had a shape like a blade.

It even had feathers on its legs. This made it look like it had four wings. The feathers on its head might have made a crest. Its wing feathers were shaped in a unique way. The longest feathers were near the wrist. This made the wings look very round instead of pointed.

Scientists first found these fossils in China.

They were found in the Tiaojishan Formation. These rocks are from the Late Jurassic period. This was about 160 million years ago. A scientist named Xu Xing and his team described the first specimen. They named it huxleyi to honor Thomas Henry Huxley. He was a scientist who lived at the same time as Charles Darwin. He was one of the first to say that birds and dinosaurs were close relatives.

Many important fossils have been found in different places.

One specimen was found by a local farmer in the Yaolugou area. This specimen was larger and more complete than the first one. Another specimen is kept in the Beijing Museum of Natural History. Scientists used a scanning electron microscope to look at its feathers. They looked at tiny parts called melanosomes to find its color. The Shandong Tianyu Museum of Nature in China holds 255 specimens. One fossil there is named STM 0-214. It has very clear color patterns.

Finding Anchiornis is like finding a missing piece of a puzzle.

It helps us see the transition between dinosaurs and birds. We can see how feathers changed over time. The shaggy feathers might have kept the animal warm. They might have also helped keep it dry. Even though it had wings, it might not have been a great flyer. Its wings were not as efficient as the wings on birds today. Looking at these fossils helps us understand how all living things change.
