Yutyrannus was a large predator that lived a long time ago.

Its name means "feathered tyrant" in a mix of languages. This name comes from the Mandarin word for feather and the Greek word for tyrant. It belonged to a group of dinosaurs called Tyrannosauroidea. Scientists find this animal very special because it had feathers. It is the largest dinosaur known to have direct evidence of feathers.

This makes it forty times heavier than the previous record holder, Beipiaosaurus.

Scientists found three fossils that tell us how this animal worked.

These fossils include an adult, a subadult, and a juvenile. The fossils show long, thin feathers that could be up to 10 centimeters long. These feathers may have helped the dinosaur stay warm in a cold climate. The average temperature in its home was only 10 degrees Celsius. The feathers might also have been used for display to show off. Some fossils even show a wavy crest on the snout for looking beautiful.

A scientist named Xu Xing and his team led the work. They found the fossils in the Liaoning Province of China. The fossils came from a place called Batu Yingzi in the Yixian Formation. This layer of rock is about 125 million years old. The fossils were found in pieces about the size of bath mats. Two people could carry each piece of the stone.

There are many important facts about the size of Yutyrannus.

The largest adult specimen was about 9 meters long. It weighed about 1,400 kilograms according to some estimates. Another researcher named Gregory S. Paul gave lower weight estimates in 2016. The smallest specimen was a juvenile that was eight years younger than the adult. This young dinosaur was just over 4 meters long. The skull of the adult was about 60 centimeters long. These numbers help us see how huge the animal really was.

Learning about Yutyrannus helps us understand how dinosaurs changed as they grew.

This change during growth is called ontogeny. As they grew, their skulls became deeper and more robust. Their legs and arms actually became smaller compared to the rest of the body. Some scientists think these dinosaurs lived in packs to hunt. They may have hunted even larger animals called sauropods. This helps us picture how a large predator lived in a temperate rainforest.
