This layer of rock is about 125 million years old. The fossils were found in pieces about the size of bath mats. Two people could carry each piece of the stone.

The smallest specimen was a juvenile that was eight years younger than the adult. This young dinosaur was just over 4 meters long. The skull of the adult was about 60 centimeters long. The postorbital bone, located near the eye, has a small secondary process. In the lower jaw, the main opening on the outer side is located in the surangular bone. These specific anatomical traits help scientists distinguish Yutyrannus from its close relatives.

Fossil imprints show that these feathers were long and filamentous, reaching up to 10 centimeters. While the quality of preservation is low, the feathers covered many body parts. The juvenile specimen showed filaments on its neck and feathers on its upper arms.

During ontogeny, the body proportions of Yutyrannus changed significantly. As the dinosaur grew, its skull became deeper and more robust. However, its lower legs, feet, forelimbs, and ilia became relatively smaller in proportion to its body. This growth pattern helps paleontologists reconstruct the life history of the species. Some researchers also study its feeding habits. A 2018 study of the hyoid structure suggests Yutyrannus had a flat tongue, similar to a modern crocodile. This indicates the animal had a fixed tongue, unlike birds or pterosaurs.

The environment of Yutyrannus was likely a temperate rainforest.

The Yixian Formation had an average annual temperature of about 10 degrees Celsius. This area likely featured many bodies of water and coniferous plants. Volcanic eruptions and forest fires were common in this landscape. Because the three known specimens were found together, some scientists suggest Yutyrannus may have been a pack hunter. They speculate that these individuals may have been hunting large sauropods when they died. This social behavior would have been a key part of its role in the ecosystem.
