Gorgonopsians were powerful hunters that lived a very long time ago.

They lived during the Middle to the Upper Permian. This was roughly between 270 and 252 million years ago. These animals belong to a group called therapsids. They were important because they became the top predators in their world. They lived on a single giant continent called Pangaea.

Their lives changed as the Earth became much drier over time.

These hunters had very special tools for catching food. They had long, narrow skulls with huge canine teeth. These teeth looked like sabres used for stabbing or slashing.

To use them, they could open their mouths incredibly wide. This wide opening is called a gape. Some even had a special part of the jaw to hold the teeth. They might hunt by biting a large animal and then retreating. They would follow the animal until it was too tired to move.

Then, they would move in to finish the hunt.

Scientists have studied these creatures since the late 19th century.

They found the oldest known gorgonopsian on the Spanish island of Mallorca. Many species look very similar to each other. This makes it hard for experts to tell them apart. Because of this, the way we name them has changed many times. Some scientists thought the different sizes were just different types of animals. Now, many think the small ones were just young versions of the large ones.

There are many interesting facts about how they lived.

Some gorgonopsians were small, but others grew to be as big as bears. The largest was named Inostrancevia, which could reach 1 meter in skull length. They walked with a parasagittal gait, meaning their legs moved under their bodies. This is similar to how a crocodile walks on land. They had a keen sense of smell and good binocular vision. This helped them see depth while they were hunting.

They also had a parietal eye to help them sense sunlight.

Eventually, these amazing hunters disappeared from the Earth.

Permian–Triassic paleoclimate
Permian–Triassic paleoclimate

This happened during the Permian–Triassic extinction event. Huge volcanic activity created the Siberian Traps. This caused a massive spike in greenhouse gases. The world became very hot and dry very quickly. There was also acid rain and many wildfires. These big changes meant the gorgonopsians could no longer survive. Later, other animals like dinosaurs took over their roles as top predators.
