Inostrancevia was a very large hunter from a long time ago.

It lived during the Late Permian period. This was in places we now call Russia and Southern Africa. These animals were gorgonopsians. That means they were meat-eating creatures with saber teeth.

Inostrancevia had a very big skull. It also had large teeth called canines. Some of these teeth could grow very long. They likely helped the hunter cut through the skin of its prey.

The animal could open its mouth at a wide angle. This helped it give very strong, fatal bites. It was a fast predator.

Scientists found many fossils of this animal. Some were found in Russia by Vladimir Amalitsky.

Other fossils were found in South Africa. These new finds belong to a type called I. africana. In its home, Inostrancevia was an apex predator. An apex predator is a hunter at the top of its food chain.
