Mammaliaformes

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Long ago, new animals appeared. They are called mammaliaforms. These animals are the closest relatives to modern mammals. Most were small and looked like shrews.

These early animals had special teeth. They had one set of baby teeth. Then they had one set of adult teeth. These teeth fit together very well. This helped them grind food quickly. Fast digestion gives them power to stay warm.

Many mammaliaforms had fur. Fur acts like a warm blanket. It helped tiny animals stay warm. Some had two layers of fur. One was guard hairs. The other was underfur.

They may have had milk for their young. This is called lactation. Milk glands might have helped keep eggs moist. Some animals also had whiskers. These help them feel things near their faces.

Their legs moved in a wide way. This is a sprawling gait. It looks a bit like a lizard. Some had bones in their hips called epipubic bones. These bones help support their muscles. They also affect how the animals give birth.
