Mammaliaformes

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Mammaliaformes are a group of ancient animals. They are the closest relatives to the mammals we see today. This group includes modern mammals and their extinct relatives. These animals first appeared during the Late Triassic period. They grew out of earlier animals called cynodonts. Scientists use special names to group these living things. Some scientists use the name Mammalia for a slightly larger group. This larger group includes animals like Sinoconodon and Adelobasileus.

These animals had a very special way of eating. Most reptiles have many teeth that they replace often. Mammaliaformes had one set of baby teeth. Later, they grew one set of adult teeth. These teeth fit together very precisely. This helped them grind food into small pieces. Fast digestion gives them the energy they need. This is important because they were endothermic. Endothermic means they could keep their bodies warm.

Many of these creatures had fur to stay warm. Small animals like Hadrocodium were only 3.2 cm long. Tiny animals need fur to keep heat in. One animal named Castorocauda even had two layers of fur. It had guard hairs and a soft underfur. Some may have also had whiskers to feel their way. Whiskers are called vibrissae in science. These helped them sense things near their faces.

History shows us where these animals lived. We find many fossils from the Jurassic period. Many of these fossils come from Portugal and China. Scientists have even found the earliest confirmed signs of fur there. Some animals may have also used milk to feed young. This is called lactation. In some groups, milk glands kept leathery eggs moist. This is a trait we still see in monotremes today.

Their bodies worked differently than modern mammals. Many early mammaliaforms had a sprawling gait. This means their legs moved out to the sides like a lizard. Some animals had extra bones called epipubic bones. These bones helped support their strong muscles. However, these bones also made it hard for bellies to expand. This meant they had to lay very small eggs. Some might have even carried their young in pouches.
