Scientists have debated the exact reasons for their eventual extinction. One major hypothesis is competition with the order Carnivora. Some experts suggest that carnivorans were more efficient hunters. They argue that the different shapes of carnassial teeth gave carnivorans an advantage. Others suggest that carnivorans may have had larger or more complex brains. This could have allowed them to hunt in packs and steal food from hyaenodonts. In North America, some believe carnivorans limited the evolution of hyaenodonts. This forced hyaenodonts to remain in specific, large-bodied roles. 
Another perspective focuses on environmental and climatic changes. Many hyaenodonts, especially the hyainailouroids, were adapted to forested environments. As the climate changed, many areas became much more arid. Forests were replaced by savannas, steppes, or deserts. This shift likely made their habitats unsuitable. In Africa, the decline of certain prey species also played a role. The uplifting of the Ethiopian plateau and volcanic activity may have contributed to these changes. These geological events changed the landscape and the food web. 
Understanding hyaenodonts helps scientists map the history of mammalian life. They were once part of a group called Creodonta. For a long time, scientists thought hyaenodonts and oxyaenids were closely related in this group. However, modern phylogenetic analysis shows that Creodonta was a "wastebasket taxon." This means it was a group used to classify many unrelated animals. We now know that Hyaenodonta and Oxyaenodonta are distinct orders. Studying hyaenodonts shows how different lineages of predators compete and change over time. Their story is a complex puzzle of biology, climate, and geography.
