Many people call them "false saber-tooths." They looked like cats, but they were not true cats. They belong to a group called Feliformia. This is a group of animals that includes modern cats.

These animals came in many sizes. Some were small like a bobcat.

Others were as large as a jaguar or a lion. Some were even bigger. They had strong, cat-like bodies. Most had short legs and short tails. Their teeth were also very different. Some had long, sharp teeth called canines. These teeth helped them hunt. Other nimravids had smaller teeth, just like modern cats.

Nimravids lived in North America, Africa, and Eurasia. They first appeared in Asia a long time ago. They liked to live in forests. As the world grew drier, the forests changed to open woods. This helped the nimravids thrive. Eventually, they went extinct. In North America, their disappearance led to a "cat gap." This was a time when no cat-like hunters lived there for 7 million years.
