Most people know them as saber-toothed cats. This name comes from their long, sharp teeth. These cats were not related to modern tigers.

They were part of the cat family, but they were a different branch. Some were small like lynxes. Others were very big, even larger than lions.

There were two main types of these cats. Dirk-toothed cats had long, thin teeth and heavy bodies. Scimitar-toothed cats had shorter, wider teeth and leaner bodies.

These cats had a special way of hunting. They would hold their prey still. Then, they used strong neck muscles to drive their teeth into the neck. This helped them kill quickly.

These cats lived on almost every continent. They lived in places like North America and Europe. Later, they began to disappear. This might be because the world changed. They also had to fight other big cats for food. The last saber-toothed cats died out about 10,000 to 13,000 years ago.
