These cats lived a long time ago. They lived from 5 million to 1.2 million years ago. Some fossils show they may have lived even earlier. They lived in many places like Africa, Asia, Europe, and North America.

Dinofelis cats came in different sizes. Some were as big as a jaguar. Others were small like a lynx. They had long, flat teeth. These teeth were called canines. These teeth were not as long as other saber-toothed cats.

Scientists study their fossils to learn how they lived. One species, Dinofelis aronoki, was the largest. Another species, Dinofelis barlowi, was very small. It was only 70 cm high.

These cats lived in many kinds of places. They did not just live in open grass. They also lived in forests. Some fossils suggest they hunted animals that ate grass. Scientists think they may have even hunted early humans. Dinofelis died out a long time ago. This may have happened when forests began to disappear during the ice age.
