Dinofelis was a group of extinct saber-toothed cats. These cats were part of a group called machairodontine cats. They lived a very long time ago. Most lived from 5 million to 1.2 million years ago. Some fossils from Lothagam might be even older. They could date back to 8 million years ago. These cats lived in many places. You could find them in Europe, Asia, Africa, and North America.

These cats came in many different sizes. Some species were as big as a jaguar. Other species were much smaller. Some were like a large lynx or a small puma. Their teeth were very special. They had long and flat canine teeth. These teeth were not as long as other saber-tooth cats. Their lower canines were strong. However, their cheek teeth were not as strong as modern big cats.

Scientists have spent a long time naming these cats. Otto Zdansky named the first species in 1924. He called it Dinofelis abeli. Later, experts Lars Werdelin and Margaret E. Lewis wrote a big review in 2001. They named a new species called Dinofelis aronoki. That name comes from a phrase in the Turkana language. It means "it was terrible." In 2023, a new species was named Dinofelis werdelini. This name honors Lars Werdelin.

There were many different kinds of Dinofelis. Dinofelis aronoki was the largest known species. It lived in Kenya and Ethiopia. Dinofelis barlowi was much smaller. It was only 70 cm high. This species lived in Europe and Asia. Dinofelis cristata lived in India and China. Its skull looked a lot like modern Panthera cats. Dinofelis darti lived in South Africa. Other species lived in Texas and East Africa.

We can learn how they lived by looking at fossils. Some fossils from Olduvai Gorge show they liked mixed habitats. They did not just live in grass or forests. They lived in both. They likely hunted animals that ate grass. Some fossils in South Africa show they may have hunted early humans. These include Australopithecus africanus. They might have also hunted Paranthropus. The cats may have died out during the ice age. This happened as their forest homes slowly disappeared.
