Dorcatherium was a type of small animal. It lived a long time ago. These animals were part of a group called tragulids. This group includes animals called chevrotains.

Dorcatherium lived in many places. It lived in Europe and East Africa. It also lived in the Siwaliks in Asia. They lived during the Miocene time. This was a long period in Earth's history.

Scientists study their teeth to learn about them. They look at the wear on the teeth. They also look at the tooth enamel. Enamel is the hard outer part of a tooth. These studies show what the animals ate. One kind, D. naui, mostly ate fruit. It was a frugivorous browser. This means it ate fruit and leaves from plants.

Different kinds lived in different places. D. pigotti lived in Kenya. It likely lived in areas with fewer trees. Another kind was D. chappuisi. It lived in even more open lands. These lands were also very dry. This helps us see how they lived. It is a way to learn about the past.
