Long ago, a group of animals called amphicyonids lived on Earth.

People often call them "bear-dogs." This is because they looked like a mix of bears and dogs.

These animals first appeared in North America. Later, they spread to Europe, Asia, and Africa.

They came in many sizes. Some were small, but others grew very large.

Amphicyonids had different ways of moving. Some had long legs for running. These animals walked on their toes. Others walked like bears. They put their whole foot on the ground.

Their teeth helped them eat. Most were meat-eaters. Some could even crush bones.

Their skulls were often large. Some had a sharp ridge on top of the skull. This helped hold big jaw muscles.

Eventually, these animals died out. This happened because the world changed. Forests became smaller. They also had to compete with other hunters like hyenas and bears. We learn about them today from their fossils.
