Dogs have large bullae that stay consistent. Amphicyonids started with small bullae that grew more developed later. 
Their teeth were specialized for different types of diets. Most were mesocarnivorous, meaning they ate mostly meat like modern dogs. Some were hypercarnivorous, eating entirely meat like modern cats. Only two small Miocene species, Pseudarctos and Ictiocyon, show evidence of being hypocarnivorous. This means they ate mostly plants. Different subfamilies developed unique dental trends. The Daphoenines had dog-like teeth with large premolars. The Temnocyonines and Haplocyonines had massive crushing premolars similar to hyenas. The Amphicyonines focused on large, strong carnassial teeth for shearing meat.
Locomotion and body shape also varied across the family. Some species had cat-like bodies with long tails. They used short, strong limbs to stalk and pounce on prey. These animals were likely plantigrade or semiplantigrade. This means they walked with the soles of their feet flat on the ground like bears. Other lineages were cursorial, meaning they were specialized for running. These species had long legs and walked on their toes, or digitigrade. Examples include the Temnocyonines and the large Daphoenodon.
The history of the amphicyonids spans many millions of years. They first appeared in North America during the middle Eocene, around 45 Ma. They spread to Europe by the late Eocene, roughly 35 Ma. By the early Miocene, they had reached Asia and Africa. The oldest known species is Daphoenus, appearing 40 to 27 Ma. In North America, they gained an advantage over nimravids during the Oligocene. This was because amphicyonids were better at running in open habitats. They eventually declined and went extinct. They disappeared from North America and Eurasia around 9 to 7 Ma. The latest remains, from the genus Bonisicyon, date to about 6.5 to 5.3 Ma in Africa.
Scientists have several hypotheses regarding their extinction. One theory suggests environmental changes caused their decline. In Western Europe, extinction coincided with climatic changes and the loss of forests. Another theory involves competition with other predators. Hypercarnivorous species may have competed with machairodonts, or saber-toothed cats. The last species might have been outcompeted by the hyena Adcrocuta. Some researchers also suggest they were replaced by more specialized animals. These included modern felids, hyenas, and more specialized bears like the agriotherini.
