How did these animals change over time? It all started with a group called Leptocyon. This name comes from Greek words meaning slender dog.

These early animals appeared in Sioux County, Nebraska, between 34 and 32 million years ago. They were quite small, with some species weighing only about 2 kg. One specific species, Leptocyon delicatus, was the smallest canid to ever exist.

During the Oligocene, Caninae lived alongside the Borophaginae. These two groups were sister groups, meaning they shared similar features. However, they had very different ways of surviving. The Borophaginae had skulls designed for a powerful killing bite. In contrast, the Leptocyon were built for snatching small, fast-moving prey. This shows how different animals in the same family can adapt to different roles.

It is not entirely clear if C. cipio belongs to the genus Canis or the genus Eucyon. This movement into Eurasia marked a major change in their global distribution.

Modern scientists group Caninae into different tribes based on their traits. One group is the Vulpini, which are the fox-like canines. This tribe includes the genus Vulpes and the genus Urocyon, which contains gray foxes. Another group is the tribe Canini. This tribe includes the wolf-like canines and the South American canines. The South American group, known as Cerdocyonina, includes animals like the maned wolf and the bush dog.

Researchers use molecular data and DNA analysis to map these relationships. These studies show that the wolf-like canines and South American canines form the tribe Canini. Genetic evidence suggests that wolf-like canines, such as Canis, Cuon, and Lycaon, may have an African origin. Meanwhile, molecular data implies that the living Canidae family had a North American origin about 10 million years ago. These complex family trees help us see how one ancestor branched into many different forms.

By studying the phylogeny of these animals, we see a massive variety of life. The fox-like canines are rooted by animals like the fennec fox.
