They first lived in North America about 35 million years ago. One of the first kinds was called Leptocyon.

These animals were very small. One kind weighed only about 2 kg. Leptocyon had teeth for catching small, fast prey.

Canines have long legs and light limbs. These parts helped them travel to new places. They spent most of their history in North America. Then, they moved to Asia, Europe, and Africa.

One early canine to reach Eurasia was the size of a coyote.

Today, canines are split into different groups. One group is the Vulpini, which are foxes. Another group is the Canini. This group includes wolves and other wolf-like animals. There are also canines from South America. These include the bush dog and the maned wolf.
