One kind of hybrid is the wolfdog. This happens when a wolf and a dog have a baby. A wolfdog might look more like a wolf. It may have a narrow chest and long legs.

The dingo is a type of wild dog. Dingos often mix with domestic dogs. This can create new types of herding dogs.

Another hybrid is the coywolf. This is a mix of a coyote and a wolf. In some places, red wolves also carry coyote genes. Scientists study these animals to learn how they are related. Most wolf-like animals have 78 chromosomes. Chromosomes are tiny parts inside cells that carry traits. If the number of chromosomes is too different, hybrids are hard to make. For example, a red fox has only 34 chromosomes. Because of this, foxes and wolves cannot breed.

Jackals can also make hybrids with dogs. Some of these mixes are used as working dogs.
