These bears are called Arctodus. Their name means "bear tooth." There were two main kinds of these bears. One was the lesser short-faced bear. The other was the giant short-faced bear.

The giant species is very well known. It was one of the largest land-dwelling carnivores to ever exist. These bears are part of a group called Tremarctinae. This group of bears is found only in the Americas.

How these bears lived depends on their species. Arctodus simus was a huge omnivore, which means it ate both plants and animals.

They preferred living in temperate open woodlands. They could also adapt to many different habitats. These bears ate plants and also ate animals like deer, camels, and tapirs.

Their faces looked different from modern bears. They had shorter snouts, which is why they are called short-faced bears. Some scientists think their wide snouts helped them smell well. Others think a wide snout helped them swallow large amounts of food quickly.

Scientists have been studying these bears for a long time. Joseph Leidy first described Arctodus in 1854. He found fossils of the smaller species in South Carolina.

Later, J. A. Richardson found the first fossils of the giant species in California in 1878. Edward Drinker Cope described those fossils in 1879. For many years, researchers grouped all these bears together. It was not until 1967 that Björn Kurtén revised the names. This helped scientists realize there were two distinct species.

Arctodus simus was truly massive.

Adult males could weigh around 850 kg on average. Some very large males might have weighed even more. They showed a lot of sexual dimorphism. This means males and females looked very different in size.

Males were often much larger than females. A large male could stand very tall on its hind legs. It could reach up to 5.5 meters high. When walking on four legs, a large male could look an adult human in the eye.

These bears eventually disappeared from the Earth. The smaller species, Arctodus pristinus, went extinct about 300,000 years ago.

The giant species, Arctodus simus, died out about 12,800 years ago. We do not know the exact reason they disappeared. For the smaller bear, it might have been climate change. It also might have been competition with other bears like the black bear.

In contrast, A. simus had a much broader range across the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Scientists believe A. simus evolved from A. pristinus. The two species likely lived in the same areas during the Middle Pleistocene.

Arctodus simus was a massive omnivore that could adapt to many different environments.

It preferred temperate open woodlands but could utilize various habitats for feeding. Its diet included C3 vegetation and browsing herbivores like deer, camelids, and tapir.

The bear's skull had a shorter snout than modern bears, which is why they are called short-faced bears. Some researchers suggest this wide rostrum might have housed a highly developed olfactory apparatus for smelling. Others think the shape allowed for a larger throat passage to swallow food quickly, similar to a spotted hyena.

The history of discovering Arctodus began in the 19th century. Joseph Leidy first described the genus in 1854 using fossils from South Carolina.

Later, J. A. Richardson found the first fossils of A. simus in California in 1878. Edward Drinker Cope described these finds in 1879, initially calling them Arctotherium simum. For a long time, all specimens were grouped under the name A. pristinus. It was not until a 1967 revision by Björn Kurtén that the two species were clearly separated. Today, researchers distinguish Arctodus from the genus Arctotherium, which is found in different regions.
