Ground sloths were a diverse group of animals that lived long ago. They were part of a group called Xenarthra. This group includes the small sloths we see in trees today. However, ground sloths were very different. Some were tiny, like a large cat. Others were huge and heavy. The largest ones, like Megatherium, were roughly the size of modern elephants.

Many ground sloth groups used this path to move north. One famous group was the Megalonychidae. They first appeared in Patagonia about 35 million years ago. Another group, the Megatheriidae, appeared about 30 million years ago. The giant Eremotherium was larger than an African bush elephant. It could grow to be 6 meters long. These large animals were very successful for a long time.

Even though they were successful, most ground sloths disappeared. They went extinct on the American mainland about 12,000 years ago. This happened during the end-Pleistocene extinction event. Scientists think this might be because of climate change. It might also be because of hunting by humans. We have found sites where humans butchered sloths. However, some sloths lived longer on islands like Cuba. The last ones on those islands lived until about 1550 BCE. This shows how different environments can change how long a species survives.

Most had only five teeth in the upper jaw and four in the lower jaw. These teeth were hypselodont, meaning they were rootless and grew continuously.

Ground sloths used different features to help them eat plants. Many were herbivores, though some may have been omnivores. Their mouth shapes suggest different feeding methods. Sloths with narrow muzzles likely had prehensile lips, similar to a black rhinoceros. Those with wider muzzles likely had square lips, like a white rhinoceros, used with mobile tongues. Some species had a gap in their jaws called a diastema. This gap separated their front teeth from their other teeth.

Locomotion and defense were also shaped by their unique bodies. Most ground sloths were unable to run. They likely relied on other strategies to stay safe from predators. Many could adopt a bipedal stance, standing on two legs when stationary. This allowed them to use their front limbs to grasp vegetation or use claws for defense. Their hands had well-developed claws on their finger bones. In several families, the hindfoot was inwardly rotated. This meant they bore much of their weight on specific parts of the foot.
