Scientists learned about them from old bones. A man named Édouard Lartet found fossils in France. He saw that these animals were big carnivores. This means they were meat eaters.

He noticed their teeth were very unique. Some teeth looked like those of a raccoon. Other teeth looked like those of a dog. One special part was a third bump on their upper jaw.

One well-known type was Amphicyon major. It was about the size of a modern bear. It also walked with its feet flat on the ground. This way of walking is called plantigrade. Scientists found bones for this species in Europe and Turkey. Another type, Amphicyon giganteus, was even larger. It lived in many places, including Egypt and Pakistan. These animals were top predators in their time.
