Scientists often call them "bear-dogs." This name comes from how they looked. They had features that looked like bears and features that looked like dogs. These animals lived in many places, including North America, Africa, and Eurasia.

They were important hunters in their time. They lived during the Miocene epoch. This was a time when many different types of animals shared the land.

These animals had very special teeth and ways of moving.

Their front teeth were shaped like the teeth of a raccoon. Their back teeth, called molars, were more like the teeth of a dog. One very unique thing was a third bump on their upper jaw. This bump was not found in other meat-eaters. They also walked in a way called plantigrade. This means they walked with their feet flat on the ground, just like modern bears do.

We know about these animals because of fossil hunters.

A scientist named Édouard Lartet found many fossils in a place called Sansan, France. He found these bones in 1835. Lartet sent pieces of jaws and bones to a museum. He saw that these animals lived alongside other animals like ancient deer. He also talked with a scientist named Henri Marie Ducrotay de Blainville. In 1841, de Blainville drew pictures of their skeletons. He helped name different species like Amphicyon major.

There were many different types of bear-dogs.

One famous type was Amphicyon major. It was about the size of the bears we see today. It lived in Europe and Turkey. Another type was Amphicyon giganteus. This species was even larger than Amphicyon major. Fossils of this giant animal have been found in many places. These include Western Europe, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and even Namibia. Some fossils were also found in Egypt and Pakistan.

Learning about Amphicyon helps us see how animals change.

By looking at their teeth, we can see how they hunted. Their serrated teeth show they were top predators. They are a great example of how nature creates unique creatures. Just like dogs and bears are different today, these animals were a mix of traits. Studying their bones tells the story of life on Earth a long time ago.
