These animals belonged to a group called Borophaginae. They lived in North America a very long time ago. This was from the Middle Miocene until the early Pleistocene. That is about 12 million to 2 million years ago. Some people call them "bone-crushing" dogs. They were part of a large family of canids.

Scientists find their fossils in many different places. This shows they were very successful in their environment.

These dogs had a very unique way of eating. They had a bulging forehead and very strong jaw muscles.

Their premolar teeth were built for crushing hard bone. In the past, some scientists thought they were only scavengers. Scavengers eat animals that are already dead. Now, many experts think they were also active hunters. They may have hunted in social packs to work together. This would help them use every part of a meal. Using the bones helped them get all the energy they needed.

Finding these fossils has helped us learn a lot. For a long time, early species were called Osteoborus. Now, scientists know that Osteoborus and Borophagus are the same thing. We know they ate bone because of coprolites. Coprolites are fossilized animal droppings. These fossils prove their teeth really could crack bone. This helps us see how they lived in their world. It shows they filled a special role in nature.

Borophagus had many different species living at different times. Some names include Borophagus diversidens and Borophagus secundus. There was also Borophagus littoralis and Borophagus orc. An adult was about 80 cm long. This is a length similar to a modern coyote. However, the Borophagus was much more powerfully built.

They lived alongside many other large animals. They shared the land with the bear Agriotherium. They also lived near saber-toothed cats like Amphimachairodus coloradensis.

These dogs had a very large menu of food. They might have hunted or scavenged many different animals. Their prey included ancient camels like Aepycamelus. They also ate pronghorn antelope called Cosoryx. They even ate ancient horses like Neohipparion and Nannippus. Some of their meals might have been rhinoceroses like Teleoceras. This shows how important they were in the food web. Eventually, other dogs like Canis edwardii began to take their place.
