You might know it by other names like the forest dog or bushfox. It is part of a group called canids, which includes dogs. Even though it has "fox" in its name, it is not a true fox. Its scientific name, Cerdocyon thous, comes from Greek words. These words mean "fox dog" to describe its look. This animal has lived in central South America since the Pleistocene epoch.

This fox has a very interesting way of eating. It is an omnivore, which means it eats both plants and meat. Its name comes from its habit of hunting crabs. During the wet season, it searches muddy floodplains for these tasty crustaceans. When the weather is dry, the fox eats more insects. It also likes to eat birds, rodents, lizards, and even fruit. This flexible diet helps it survive in many different places.

Scientists have studied this fox for a long time. Linnaeus first described it in 1766 as Canis thous. Later, in 1839, Hamilton-Smith placed it in its own group called Cerdocyon. This group of animals first appeared in North America about 6 million years ago. A group called Cerdocyonina lived there until about 1.3 or 1.4 million years ago. The genus Cerdocyon has stayed in South America for a very long time. It may have arrived there around 3.1 million years ago.

There are many specific details about how these foxes look and live. Their fur is short and thick with colors like grey, brown, or yellow. They often have red fur on their faces and legs. You can spot them by their black-tipped ears and bushy tails.

Most foxes are nocturnal, so they are most active at night. They live in many places from Colombia to Argentina. They like woodlands, savannas, and thickets, but they avoid rainforests and high mountains. They often live in burrows made by other animals.

These foxes also have a very social way of life. They often form monogamic teams to help them hunt. This means a male and female stay together as a pair. They raise their pups together until the young are independent. This happens around 5 to 8 months after they are born. The pups are weaned from their parents' milk at about three months. While some farmers worry about them, the fox is not in danger of extinction. They are considered a stable and common animal in the wild.
