These animals live in Central America and South America. Some live in the Lesser Antilles too. They are related to guinea pigs. However, agoutis are larger and have longer legs. Their fur is coarse and can be many colors. They might look brown, reddish, or even black. Most agoutis have lighter colors on their bellies.

Agoutis have a very interesting way of moving. They can trot or move in quick springs. This looks like a gallop when they run fast. They are also very good at swimming in water. When they eat, they sit on their hind legs. They use their front paws to hold their food. Agoutis eat fallen fruit, leaves, and roots. They are even strong enough to open Brazil nuts. They use their sharp teeth to crack them open.

People have known about these animals for a long time. The name "agouti" comes from South American languages. These languages are called Guarani or Tupi. In those languages, the name is written as akuti. In Mexico, people have different names for them. In Panama, they have a special name too. Even the Spanish term is called agutí. Some animals called pacas were once in this group. Scientists moved them to a new group in 1998.

There are many different types of agoutis.

One type is the Red-rumped agouti. Another is the Mexican agouti. There is also the Central American agouti. They can grow quite large in length and weight. Their tails are very short or sometimes not there at all. They have five toes on their front feet. They have three toes on their hind feet. One toe is very small.

Agoutis live in many different places. They like rainforests, savannas, and even fields. They hide in hollow trees or burrows at night. They can live for up to 20 years. This is a very long time for a rodent. Mothers have litters of two to four pups. The pups are born in nests of leaves and hair. They can start eating in just one hour. The parents often stay together for their whole lives.
