They look like large guinea pigs. However, agoutis have longer legs. They have short, hairless tails. Their fur is coarse. It can be brown, black, or even orange. Their bellies are usually a lighter color.

Agoutis are very fast. They can run in a trot or a gallop.

They are also good swimmers. When they eat, they sit on their back legs. They use their front paws to hold food. Agoutis eat fruit, leaves, and roots. They are strong enough to open Brazil nuts with their teeth. They also hide extra food in the ground.

These animals live in forests and fields. They hide in tree trunks or burrows at night. Agoutis have a long life. They can live for up to 20 years. Mothers give birth to two to four pups. The pups are born in nests made of leaves and hair. They can eat within one hour of birth. Parents often stay together for their whole lives.
