Strix (bird)

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Strix is a group of owls. You might call them wood owls. They are medium or large birds. They have strong bodies. Most of these owls live in woods. They are nocturnal, which means they are active at night.

These owls do not have ear tufts. You can tell them apart by their hooting sounds. They hunt for small animals. They eat birds, reptiles, and small mammals. There are 22 different species in this group. One is the tawny owl. Another is the great grey owl.

A scientist named Carl Linnaeus named this group in 1758. The name Strix is a Latin word for owl. Long ago, the name also meant a mythical owl monster.

We can find fossils of these owls in the ground. This shows they have lived for a very long time. Some fossils come from places like South Dakota and Nebraska. Other fossils come from Poland. These old bones help us learn about the history of owls.
