These birds are slender with long, narrow tails. Their feathers are brownish-grey with black and white stripes. This pattern is called barring. Their faces are blue-grey. They even have bare blue skin around their eyes.

Zebra doves make soft, staccato cooing sounds. In Thailand and Indonesia, people keep them as pets. Some people even hold contests to find the best voice.

These birds live in parks, gardens, and farms. They like to stay in open areas. Most zebra doves forage on the ground. This means they look for food on the dirt or short grass. They eat small seeds from weeds and grass. They also eat tiny insects.

When it is time to breed, males perform a special dance. They bow and coo while spreading their tails. The female picks a spot for the nest. She makes low sounds to call for help. The nest is a simple platform made of leaves and grass. Both parents sit on the eggs to keep them warm. They lay one or two white eggs. The babies leave the nest in two weeks.
