Barbary dove

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The Barbary dove is a pet bird. It belongs to the dove and pigeon family. Scientists once thought it came from a different bird. Now we know it comes from the African collared dove.

These birds live a long time. Most live for up to 12 years. One dove lived for 29 years! People breed them in many colors. Some birds have a mutation, which is a change in their body. This change makes them all white. Magicians use these white birds in shows. People also release them at weddings or funerals. However, they do not have a homing instinct. This means they cannot find their way home.

Barbary doves make a soft coo sound. They use special muscles to do this. These muscles vibrate air from their lungs. These are the fastest muscles in any animal with a backbone. They move ten times faster than muscles used for running. This type of muscle is usually in a rattlesnake's tail. The Barbary dove is the first bird found with these muscles.
