The American badger is a very strong animal.

It lives in many parts of North America. You can find them in the United States and Mexico. They also live in parts of Canada. These animals love to live in open grasslands. They prefer areas with sandy soil. This makes it much easier for them to dig.

This animal is a member of the Mustelidae family. This is a group of meat-eating mammals. It includes animals like otters, weasels, and ferrets.

Badgers are masters of digging. They are what scientists call fossorial specialists. This means they are built to live and work underground.

They have a cone-shaped head and thick fur. Their front legs are very powerful. They have huge claws that can reach 5 cm in length. To dig, they use a method called scratch-digging. They pull their front legs back to break the soil. Then they push the dirt to the sides or behind them. This helps them reach prey hiding in tunnels.

Scientists have studied these animals for a long time. We know the American badger split from other mustelids about 18 million years ago.

This is a very long time in history. One researcher named Fred Lindzey wrote about them in 1994. He studied how they live and how they cause damage to wildlife. Other experts like J. H. Quinn have studied how they live in California. These studies help us understand how to protect them. We learn how they use the land to survive.

There are many different types of American badgers. These are called subspecies.

One type lives in central Canada and the central United States. Another lives in the southern Great Lakes region. A third type lives in Alberta and the northwestern United States. The fourth type lives in the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. In Mexico, people sometimes call them tlalcoyote. These animals eat many things like mice, squirrels, and even rattlesnakes. In South Dakota, they are the most important predator of snakes.

Badgers have a very interesting way of hunting. Sometimes, they work together with coyotes.

This is called hunting in tandem. When a ground squirrel sees a coyote, it runs into its hole. But if it sees a badger, it tries to run away on top of the ground. By working together, the two predators can catch more food. This helps the coyote catch about 33% more prey. Most badgers live for 9 to 10 years in the wild. This is how they stay part of the natural world.
