Ruminants are a large group of plant-eating animals.

There are about 200 different species in this group. They include many animals you might know, like cattle, goats, and sheep. Even the tall giraffe is a ruminant.

Some wild animals, like gazelles and antelopes, belong to this group too. They are all part of a large family of animals called artiodactyls. This group is very diverse and lives in many places.

To get energy from plants, ruminants use a special way of digesting food.

Their stomach has four different parts that work together. The first two parts are the rumen and the reticulum. These two chambers act like a big vat for fermentation. Inside, tiny living things called microbes live and work. They break down tough plant parts like cellulose.

This process turns the plants into useful energy for the animal.

This special way of eating involves a step called rumination.

First, the animal swallows food and sends it to the rumen. Later, the animal brings that food back up into its mouth. This soft, chewed food is called the cud. The animal chews the cud again to break it into tiny pieces.

This helps the animal get even more nutrients from the plants.

Scientists have studied these animals for a long time. The very first fossil ruminants appeared during the Early Eocene period. These early animals were small and lived in forests. They were likely omnivores, which means they ate many different things.

Later, in the early Miocene, other types of these animals appeared. We know a lot about their history from studying fossils and DNA. For example, a 2003 study showed how different deer families are related.

Not all plant-eaters work the same way.

Some animals, like horses and rabbits, are not ruminants. They have a simple, single-chambered stomach instead of four parts. These animals are called hindgut fermenters. They use a different part of their body to break down plants. Even camels are different, as they are called pseudo-ruminants. They have three stomach compartments instead of four. It is amazing to see how many ways animals find food.
