A herbivore is an animal that eats plants as its main food.

These animals often eat leaves, fruits, or seeds. Some even eat moss, algae, or lichens. Because they eat plants, they are called primary consumers. They take the energy made by plants and pass it up the food chain.

This makes them a very important link in nature.

Eating plants can be a hard job because plants are tough. They contain a substance called cellulose that is hard to digest.

To handle this, herbivores have special mouthparts or jaws. Grazing animals like cows have wide, flat teeth to grind grass. Many herbivores also use special enzymes like amylase or cellulase to break down food. Some even have a symbiosis, which means they have tiny bacteria in their guts to help them.

We can learn about the history of eating plants from fossils.

Fossils show that insects were eating plants very early on. They lived less than 20 million years after the first land plants appeared. For a long time, there was a gap where no animals seemed to eat plants. This might have happened because there was not enough oxygen. Later, four-limbed animals called tetrapods began eating plants about 300 million years ago. The oldest known ones include animals named Desmatodon and Tyrannoroter.

There are many different ways to be a herbivore. A grazer is an animal that eats at least 90% grass. A browser eats at least 90% leaves and twigs.

Some animals do both and are called mixed-feeders. You can find many types, such as frugivores that eat fruit. Nectarivores eat nectar, like hummingbirds do. Some insects, called mucivores, eat plant fluids like sap. Even termites are herbivores because they eat wood.

Scientists use different rules to study how these animals find food. One rule is Kleiber's law. It says that larger animals need to eat less food for every bit of their weight. Another idea is the optimal foraging theory. This model looks at how an animal moves to find the best food. It also looks at how animals live in a group.

These ideas help us understand how animals survive in the wild.
