Mouth

life science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

A mouth is an important opening in the body. It is the start of a tube called the alimentary canal. This tube carries food into the body. The space just behind the opening is the oral cavity. In many animals, lips and cheeks hold this space in place. This area is also called the buccal cavity.

Most animals use their mouths to take in food. They also use them to make sounds. This helps them talk or sing to others.

How a mouth works depends on the animal. Very simple living things like Amoeba do not have a mouth. They take in food particles through their outer surface. This way of eating is called endocytosis. Most other animals have a mouth and a gut. In some invertebrates, food goes in the mouth and waste comes out the same way. In more complex animals like earthworms, food goes in one end and waste leaves through an anus.

Scientists study how mouths form to group animals. During growth, an embryo forms a small dent called a blastopore. In one group called deuterostomes, this dent becomes the anus. The mouth forms later as a new opening. In the other group, called protostomes, the dent helps form both the mouth and the anus. This helps us understand how different animal families are related.

Different animals have amazing mouth parts. Fish use their jaws to suck in food. Amphibians like frogs often use a long, sticky tongue to grab prey. Crocodilians are special because their teeth sit in deep sockets. They can replace about 80 teeth up to 50 times.

Birds do not have teeth at all. They use beaks made of a hard material called keratin. Snakes have very flexible jaws to swallow large food.

Sometimes, mouths are used for things other than eating. Some animals use their mouths to stay cool. Crocodiles gape their mouths to let heat escape. Many mammals pant to cool down through their tongues. Mouths can also be used to show strength. An animal might open its mouth wide to look scary to a rival. This is called a threat display.
