life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Your cheeks are a very important part of your face. They sit below your eyes. They are between your nose and your ears. In humans, these areas are fleshy. The skin hangs from your chin and your jaws. This area forms the side wall of your mouth. It also touches the cheekbone under your eye.

Cheeks work hard to help you eat. This happens during mastication, which is the word for chewing. Your cheeks and your tongue work as a team. They push food back toward your teeth. This keeps the food in the right place while you chew. The inside of your cheek has a soft lining. This lining is called a mucous membrane. It is also known as the buccal mucosa.

Many different animals have cheeks too. In some animals, people call these areas jowls. Most animals have hairy skin on the outside of their cheeks. On the inside, they have a special lining. This lining can be smooth. Some animals, like ruminants, have small bumps there. These bumps are called papillae. They point toward the back of the mouth.

Some animals use their cheeks in very clever ways. For example, squirrels and hamsters have a buccal pouch. This is a pocket inside the cheek. They use this pouch to carry food or other items. An eastern chipmunk is a good example of this. In some vertebrates, markings appear right under the eye. These marks help people tell different species apart.

Cheeks are also helpful for science and doctors. The cheek is the most common place to get a DNA sample. A DNA sample is a way to study your body. Doctors often use a small tool called a swab. This tool is a cotton-tipped rod. They perform a cheek swab to collect saliva. This is a simple way to learn about a person.
