Lips are soft parts attached to your jaws.

They are the most visible part of the mouth for many animals. In mammals, lips are very important for eating. They help animals gulp or suckle food. They also help with making sounds for speech.

This makes them a very useful part of the body.

Your lips work in many special ways. They can create a tight seal to keep food inside. This seal helps create suction. Babies use this suction to breastfeed.

Lips also help us speak by making different sounds. We use them for sounds like vowels or whistling. People even use their lips to play instruments like the flute or trumpet.

The way your lips look is quite unique. The skin on your lips is very thin. It only has three to five layers of cells. This is much thinner than your face skin.

Because the skin is thin, blood vessels show through. This is why lips often look red. The edge where the lips meet the face is the vermilion border. The top part of this border is called the Cupid's bow.

Many different parts of the body help the lips move. Muscles like the orbicularis oris help shape the mouth. Other muscles help you lift or lower your lips.

Nerves also play a huge role. The trigeminal nerve helps supply the upper lip. The mental nerve helps supply the lower lip. These nerves make the lips very sensitive to touch, warmth, and cold. This sensitivity helps you feel the world around you.

Lips are also great at showing how you feel. You use them to smile when you are happy. You might frown when you are sad.

Because they have so many nerve endings, they are also very sensitive to intimacy. Lips do not have sweat glands or hair. This means they lack the oils that keep skin smooth. Because of this, lips can dry out and become chapped quite easily.
