Your lips are very sensitive to touch. They have many nerve endings. This helps you feel warmth and cold. The skin on your lips is very thin. It has only three to five layers. This is much thinner than the skin on your face. Because the skin is thin, blood vessels show through. This makes lips look red.

Lips help show your feelings. You use them to smile or frown.

Lips do not have sweat glands. They also do not have hair. Without sweat or oils, lips can dry out fast. This makes them feel chapped. Sometimes, lips can even look blue. This happens if there is less oxygen in the blood. This is called cyanosis.
