Inside the mouth is a space called the buccal cavity. This is the area held by the cheeks and lips. Most animals have teeth in this space. For example, crocodiles have many teeth. They can replace them many times.

Some animals eat in different ways. Birds do not have teeth. They use beaks made of keratin, a hard material. Snakes have very flexible jaws. This helps them swallow big prey whole.

Many animals use their mouths to stay cool. Crocodiles open their mouths to let heat out. Some mammals pant to do the same thing.

Mouths also help animals talk or sing. Animals may open their mouths wide to look scary. This is a threat display. It shows off their teeth to rivals.
