Gums

Your gums, also called gingiva, are the soft tissues inside your mouth. They sit over your upper and lower jaw bones.

These tissues surround your teeth to create a tight seal. Most gums are bound closely to the bone underneath. This helps them resist the friction of food as you eat. Healthy gums act as a strong barrier for deeper tissues. They help protect your mouth from many different insults.

Gums have three main parts that work together. The marginal gums form a collar around each tooth. This edge is very thin, measuring from 0.5 to 2.0 mm wide. The attached gums are much firmer and more resilient. They are tied tightly to the bone. In the front of your mouth, these can be 3.3 to 4.5 mm wide. The third part is the interdental gum. This tissue sits in the spaces between your teeth. It can have a shape like a pyramid or a dip called a col.

Healthy gums have a very specific look and feel. Most people describe the color as coral pink. However, natural melanin can cause darker spots or patches.

The texture is often firm and may show stippling. Stippling looks like the surface of an orange peel. Healthy gums also have a smooth, scalloped shape around the teeth. They should not bleed during normal brushing or cleaning. They stay in place and do not move easily.

Gum health can change if bacteria build up. This buildup is known as plaque. When plaque stays on the gums, it can cause inflammation. This might make the gums look red, puffy, or swollen. If the disease moves deeper, it is called periodontitis. This can make it hard to keep your teeth for a long time. Sometimes the gum margin moves away from the tooth. This is called gingival recession. It can expose the neck of the tooth and cause sensitivity.

Understanding your gums helps you keep your mouth healthy. Dental professionals use the look of your tissue to give care. They look at the color, shape, and how the tissue reacts. This helps them decide on the best way to help you. Keeping your mouth clean is a very important job. Good hygiene helps prevent the growth of germs in the mouth. This keeps your gums firm and your teeth safe.
