Periodontal disease is a set of conditions that affect the tissues around your teeth. These tissues include your gums, the bone, and the parts that anchor your teeth in place.

It is a very important topic because it is the main cause of tooth loss for adults around the world. The disease often starts as a stage called gingivitis. During gingivitis, the gums might look red, feel swollen, or bleed when you brush.

If it is not treated, it can turn into a more serious stage called periodontitis. In this stage, the gums pull away from the teeth and create deep pockets.

This can lead to bone loss and even cause teeth to feel loose or fall out.

This disease works because of a sticky layer called plaque biofilm. This biofilm holds harmful bacteria like Porphyromonas gingivalis and Treponema denticola.

These bacteria infect the gum tissue and cause inflammation. This inflammation can lead to progressive damage to your teeth and gums. Sometimes, special enzymes called collagenases destroy the parts that hold the gums to the teeth. This process creates the deep pockets seen in advanced cases. If a person has diabetes, their body might have a much stronger immune response to these bacteria. This can actually make the tissue destruction happen even faster.

Scientists and doctors have studied how many people this affects. In 2015, it was estimated that 538 million people were affected globally.

This means about 10% to 15% of the general population has the condition. In the United States, the numbers are quite high for certain age groups. Nearly half of all people over age 30 are affected to some degree. For people over the age of 65, about 70% have the condition.

Research also shows that men are affected more often than women. Recent studies show that the way the mouth reacts to the disease can differ between men and women.

Many different factors can change how likely someone is to get this disease. Smoking and diabetes are two big risks that can make it worse. Other risks include HIV/AIDS, certain medications, and having a family history of the disease.

Nutrition also plays a big role in keeping your gums healthy. For example, not having enough Vitamin C can lead to bleeding gums. A lack of Vitamin D might make it harder for gums to heal after surgery. Even Vitamin K and Vitamin E are important for wound healing and preventing bleeding. Doctors can check for these risks using X-rays or by looking at the gum tissue with a special tool called a probe.

Understanding gum health is a lot like taking care of a house. Just as a house needs a strong foundation to stay standing, teeth need strong bone and gums to stay in place.

If the foundation gets weak, the whole structure might move or fall. You can protect your "foundation" by practicing good oral hygiene every day. This means brushing your teeth and flossing regularly to remove plaque. Visiting a dentist for professional cleanings is another great way to stay healthy. Sometimes, a dentist might even suggest antibiotics or surgery to help fix the damage. Making healthy dietary changes and quitting smoking can also help keep your smile strong.
