They sit over the jaw bones. The gums surround your teeth. They act like a seal to keep them safe. Most gums are tied tightly to the bone. This helps them stay strong when you eat food.

Healthy gums are often coral pink. Some people have darker spots from melanin. Melanin is a natural color in the skin.

Healthy gums feel firm. They may even look like an orange peel. This texture is called stippling.

Gums have different parts. The marginal gums form a collar around each tooth. The attached gums are firm and stay in place. The interdental gums sit in the spaces between teeth.

If gums get sick, they may change. They can look red, puffy, or swollen. This may happen if plaque builds up. Plaque is a layer of germs. Sick gums might bleed when you brush. If gums pull away from the tooth, it is called recession. This can make teeth sensitive. Keeping your mouth clean helps your gums stay healthy.
