A beak has two main parts. The top part is called the dorsal mandible. The bottom part is the ventral mandible. These two parts fit together. They work like a pair of scissors.

Beaks are very tough. They are made of chitin. Chitin is a strong material. They also have proteins. This makes the beak hard to break. Because they are so tough, they do not digest easily. Sperm whales eat many cephalopods. The whales cannot break down the beaks. Scientists often find beaks in whale stomachs.

Scientists use beaks to learn many things. They can measure the length of the beak. This helps them guess the weight of the animal. They can also tell how big the animal's body was. Even fossils of old beaks help us study the past. We can find beaks from animals that lived long ago.
