Belemnites were sea animals that lived a long time ago.

They were part of a group called coleoids. This group includes modern squid and octopuses. Belemnites looked like squid, but they had a hard skeleton inside their bodies.

This skeleton had three main parts. First, there was a tongue-shaped part called a pro-ostracum. Next was the phragmocone, which was a part with many small chambers. Finally, there was a pointy part called a guard.

The guard was the most common part found in fossils. It helped the animal stay steady while swimming. It also helped them move horizontally through the water.

Belemnites had ten arms. These arms had many small, sharp hooks. They could have between 100 and 800 hooks in total. These hooks helped them grab and hold onto prey.
