Brachiopod

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Brachiopods are sea animals with two hard shells. These shells are called valves.

Unlike clams, these valves sit on the top and bottom. The shells are not mirror images. One shell is usually larger than the other.

Many brachiopods have a small stalk. This is called a pedicle. The pedicle helps the animal stay anchored to the seabed.

It also keeps them above the sand. This way, they do not get covered by dirt.

Inside the shell, they have a feeding organ. This is called a lophophore. It is made of many tiny tentacles. The tentacles are shaped like a U.

They use these tentacles to catch food from the water. Some species have very complex, coiled tentacles to catch more food.

There are two main groups of brachiopods. Articulate brachiopods have a hinge with teeth. This helps the shells lock together. Inarticulate brachiopods do not have teeth. They use muscles to hold their shells shut. Some brachiopods live for over thirty years!
