Cephalopod beak

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Many sea creatures have a special tool for eating. This tool is called a beak, or a rostrum. It is found in all living cephalopods. This group includes animals like squids and octopuses.

The beak sits inside the mouthparts. These mouthparts are called the buccal mass. The beak is surrounded by strong, muscular head appendages. It is a very important part of how these animals live.

A beak works in a very specific way. It is made of two main parts. The top part is the dorsal mandible. The bottom part is the ventral mandible. These two pieces fit together tightly. They work just like a pair of scissors.

As they move, they can cut through things. This helps the animal eat its food.

Scientists have studied these beaks for a long time. They find them in many different groups. This includes squids, octopuses, and vampyromorphs. They also find them in extinct animals like belemnites.

Some fossils come from the Upper Cretaceous of Hokkaido, Japan. Other fossils come from the Late Cretaceous of Japan. Scientists even find parts called aptychi in ammonite fossils. These might have been part of the jaw too.

Beaks are made of very strong materials. They are made of chitin and cross-linked proteins. This makes the beak an organic composite. This material is exceptionally robust.

Because it is so tough, it is hard to digest. Predatory animals like sperm whales eat cephalopods. The whales cannot break down the beaks easily. This is why scientists find beaks in whale stomachs. The stiffness of the beak also changes. It is stiff at the tip but less stiff at the base. In the Humboldt squid, this change is very large.

Beaks can tell us a lot about the ocean. Scientists use them to study the past and the present. They measure the upper and lower parts of the beak. These are called the URL and LRL.

These measurements help experts estimate the body weight of the animal. They can also guess the length of the mantle. This helps them understand how much food a species eats. It is like using a tiny clue to solve a huge mystery.
