Cephalopods are amazing animals that live in the ocean.

Their name comes from Greek words meaning "head-feet." This is because they have a large head and many arms or tentacles. These arms are actually special muscles that used to be feet in their older ancestors. Most people know them as squids, octopuses, or cuttlefish.

Some people even call them "inkfish" because they can squirt ink. These creatures are very important to study in a branch of science called teuthology.

These animals have many clever ways to move and survive.

Many use jet-propulsion to zoom through the water. They do this by pushing water out of a funnel in their body. Some species can even use this to fly through the air for short distances! They spread their fins and tentacles like wings to stay in the air.

To stay safe, they use camouflage to hide from others. They have tiny cells in their skin called chromatophores. These cells work like little muscles to change their color and patterns in milliseconds.

Cephalopods have been around for a very long time.

They became very successful during a time called the Ordovician period. Back then, primitive nautiloids were the main leaders of the group. Scientists have found many extinct types, like the ammonites and belemnites.

While it is hard to find fossils of their soft bodies, we know they were once very common. Today, we know of about 800 different living species. They have lived in the sea for over 400 million years.

There is a huge variety in how these animals look and act.

Some are very small, like the 10 mm tiny squid. Others are giants, like the colossal squid which can weigh 700 kilograms.

They live everywhere from the surface to the very deep, dark parts of the ocean. Most live in salt water, but one small squid can live in brackish water.

You can find more species near the equator than near the cold poles.

Cephalopods are also known for being very smart.

Cuttlefish eye

They have the most complex nervous systems of all invertebrates. This means they have large brains for their body size.

An octopus can even learn to climb out of a tank to find food! Their eyes are also very advanced, similar to the eyes of a shark.

They use their sight to find prey, talk to friends, and spot danger in the sea.
