Cuttlefish

life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Cuttlefish are amazing marine molluscs. They belong to a group called cephalopods. This group includes squid, octopuses, and nautiluses.

Cuttlefish are known for being very smart. They have one of the largest brain-to-body size ratios of all invertebrates. This means their brains are quite large compared to their bodies. They can even see their surroundings while they are still inside their eggs.

This early learning might help them choose certain prey after they hatch.

One special part of a cuttlefish is its cuttlebone. This is an internal shell made of a material called aragonite. The bone is porous, which means it has many tiny holes. Cuttlefish use a part called the siphuncle to change the gas and liquid inside these holes. This helps them control their buoyancy, or how they float in the water.

Their eyes are also unique. The pupils have a smooth W-shape. They can see the polarization of light to help them see contrast.

Cuttlefish have eight arms and two long tentacles. They use these tentacles to grab prey like crabs, shrimp, and fish. Their suckers have a special ability called taste-by-touch. This allows them to sense objects and water currents.

To move, they use fins to steer in all directions. They can also use jet propulsion by sucking water into their mantle cavity. If a predator attacks, they can spray dark ink. This ink can act as a smoke screen or a decoy.

Scientists have studied these animals for a long time. The earliest fossils come from the end of the Cretaceous period. These fossils are called Ceratisepia and were found in the Netherlands.

There are currently 116 recognized species of cuttlefish. For a long time, scientists thought there were only three main groups. A paper from 2023 changed how we group them. This new study helped scientists organize the different types of cuttlefish more accurately.

Cuttlefish have very unusual blood. It is a blue-green color instead of red. This happens because they use a protein called hemocyanin to carry oxygen.

They also have three hearts to pump this blood. Two hearts pump blood to the gills, while the third pumps it to the body. People even use cuttlefish ink in cooking. It can make rice or pasta taste sweet and look dark.
