It is a type of cephalopod. This means it is related to squids and octopuses. This specific squid is very special. It is the only living member of its group. People call it the ram's horn squid because of its shell. Some also call it the tail-light squid. This is because it can make its own light.

This animal has a very clever way to stay afloat. Inside its body, it has a small, coiled shell. This shell is shaped like a flat spiral. The shell has many chambers inside. The squid can move fluid in and out of these chambers. This helps the squid control how much it floats. This shell is very light and strong. It is a buoyancy organ that helps the squid move through the water.

Scientists have studied this squid for a long time. A Swedish botanist named Carl Linnaeus first described it in 1758. He called it Nautilus spirula. Later, a French naturalist named Jean-Baptiste Lamarck changed its name. In 1799, he moved it to the genus Spirula. This is the name we still use today. A study in 2010 showed that shells can look different in different places.

Most of these squids live in the deep, dark ocean. During the day, they stay about 1,000 m deep. At night, they swim up to 100–300 m. They like water that is around 10 °C. They are often found near oceanic islands. You can find them near the Canary Islands or South Africa. In 2022, people found them in the Arabian Sea.

You might find their shells on a beach. The shells are very buoyant and float easily. They can travel long distances on ocean currents. They wash up on tropical and even temperate beaches. You might see them in New Zealand. Even though they live deep, they sometimes swim near the surface. This is how albatross birds sometimes find them.
