Inside its body, the squid has a special shell. This shell is shaped like a flat spiral. It is very light and strong. The shell helps the squid float. It does this by moving fluid in and out of the shell parts.

The squid also has a photophore. This is a light-emitting organ. It is at the tip of the mantle. The animal lets out a green light. This light helps it hide in the deep sea.
