Tusk shells are small sea animals. They are part of a group called scaphopods. Most of these animals live under the sand. They stay buried in soft mud or sand on the sea floor. This helps them stay safe from predators.

They have a long shell. The shell looks like a tusk. Some shells are smooth and glassy. Others are rough with many ribs. They use a part called a foot to dig into the sand. They stay head-down in the ground. The narrow end of the shell points up.

Tusk shells eat tiny things in the sand. They use small tentacles called captacula to find food. These tentacles grab bits of food and pull them to the mouth. Inside the mouth, they have a radula. A radula is a tool with teeth used to grind food.

These animals do not have gills. Instead, they take in oxygen through the surface of their mantle. The mantle is a soft part inside the shell. They pump water in and out to breathe. They are very old animals. Many fossils of them have been found.
